Gearbox, the well known developers of the Borderlands series has been offered the opportunity to make the next Call of Duty game and they declined. The CEO of Gearbox (Randy Pitchford) stated that “I don’t think there’s anything to accomplish there,” when asked about why he turned the offer down, and he also stated “I think if I was only in it for the money I would’ve done that.[…] I think to do Call of Duty right you need to do what needs to be done and there are a lot of people who can do that. For us it wouldn’t add to our credibility, it wouldn’t move us forward. There would be no significant challenge that would be gratifying to overcome.” I am surprised by this as it would given the company a massive amount of income to work with and expand their horizons, however I respect his decision.
I agree Gearbox is a odd candidate for this opportunity, because their prior games are nothing like the Call of Duty franchise. However I would have loved to see their take on the game, they are extremely creative and fun. In my honest opinion Call of Duty needs a big revamp, all of the past games are very similar and growing repetitive very quickly. None the less I am excited to see who will take this task on, your thoughts?
